You've probably heard of Fiber One's 90-Calorie Brownies, but did you know that they make 90-Calorie Chewy Bars as well? Along with the classic Chocolate and delicious-sounding Chocolate Caramel & Pretzel, Fiber One also has made a 90-Calorie Chocolate Peanut Butter Chewy Bar, which I will be reviewing today. An 8.2 oz. value pack box containing ten 0.82 oz. bars costs around $4.99.
A 23g bar contains 90 calories, 20 of them being from fat, 2.5g of total fat, 1g of saturated fat, 0g of trans fat, 0mg of cholesterol, 80mg of sodium, 17g of total carbohydrates, 5g of dietary fiber, 5g of sugar, and 1g of protein.
Just by looking at the weight of each bar (only 23g), I could these bars were gonna by small, but that's what you get for only 90 calories. But although these bars don't even measure out to a full ounce each, they really don't SEEM all that small once you take them out of the package. Fiber One was probably able to stretch out their surface area by packing the ingredients in really loosely. Simply put, these bars are very light and airy. They have a pleasant peanut-buttery smell to them, but not as great of a drizzle on top as Fiber One has pictured on the box. The bottom of the bar is covered in a tan, peanut butter coating- probably the same stuff they used for the drizzle.
This bar isn't quite a granola bar- most of it is made up of puffed wheat, which would help to explain this why this bar is so airy yet still pretty big in mass. There are oats in this thing, just not a lot of them. There was a fair amount of squarish chocolate chunks dotting the bar here and there.
I was fairly surprised by this bar's taste. The peanut butter coating on the bottom was very tasty and sweet- and when combined with the sweet richness of the chocolate chunks -made this bar taste quite similar to a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. This bar, for it's small calorie amount, was surprisingly indulgent in flavor. I mean, if you can get your fiber bars to taste like candy, you're doing something right.
I guess the only thing that bugged me about this bar is how airy it is. Like I said before, this bar may look reasonably big, especially for 90 calories, but it really is nothing much but air. The puffed wheat is very light, collapsing and melting away in your mouth as quick as quick can be. It's like cotton candy- a cone of it may SEEM pretty big, but if you were to get rid of the all air intertwined with the actual sugar, the serving would turn to be very small.
But overall, this was a satisfying, sweet treat for only 90 calories. It'd be a great way to get in your sweet tooth fix on a low-calorie diet. Heck, this is even a great snack even if you're NOT watching your weight. For 20% of your daily needed value of fiber, you get a Reese's-reminiscent treat. That seems like an AMAZING trade-off, if you ask me. This bar feels indulgent and is rather scrumptious. I wouldn't have any problems with picking up another box of them sometime again.
I'd give Fiber One's 90-Calorie Chocolate Peanut Butter Chewy Bars a 7.5/10.
